Susie’s Story

Having experienced homelessness as a child gives me the unique perspective of knowing how an impoverished child lives; the results of which can be devastating. When something as simple as a winter coat is out of their reach, feelings of insecurity, hopelessness and even embarrassment can be so difficult. That’s what inspired me to start Susie’s Coats for Kids. I wanted to help as many children as I could feel warm, safe and secure through the cold winter months.

After holding the first distribution in downtown Toledo on my 50th birthday, I realized there was more of a significant need than I had could have ever imagined.

From that moment, I committed to addressing this need, and every year since, Susie’s Coats has grown exponentially. The organization hosts one, large, warm apparel distribution day every winter, where, with dignity, children can select a coat with the help of a volunteer in a warm, indoor setting. We also provide items of warm apparel to children throughout the winter with a simple phone call.

All children served receive a brand-new coat, hat, and gloves to keep them warm. The act of providing face-to-face service markedly differentiates Susie’s Coats for Kids as an outstanding resource for families.

To date, Susie’s Coats for Kids has collected and distributed over 75,000 warm apparel items thanks to the generosity of family, friends, and the community of Northwest Ohio.
